Varkala - A Perfect Blend of Adventure, Relaxation, and Culinary Delights
The Journey Begins: 4 Adults, 3 Kids and a Toyota Innova Crysta from Kochi
Our choice of the Innova Crysta 2.4 Z Diesel for this trip was more than just a comfortable ride. It exemplified smart financial planning. Here’s how:
- Cost-Effective Travel: The Innova Crysta, with its spacious interiors and adequate fuel efficiency, allowed us to travel comfortably without breaking the bank. We considered the cost per kilometer, ensuring that our transportation expenses remained within budget.
- Maintenance and Reliability: By opting for a reliable beater vehicle, we minimized the risk of unexpected breakdowns or repair costs during our journey. Regular maintenance checks before the trip ensured a smooth ride.
Our adventure commenced in the comfort of Innova, which is part of our garage for over 2 years with an Odo of just 11500 under its belt, very capable, comfortable for our touring gang of 7. The overall fuel used for this trip was 56 litres, which meant we filled fuel full capacity of 65 litres at the start of our journey and forgot about it. Costing roughly ₹6500.
Other travel options:
- By Air – Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram will cost ₹2000 – ₹3000 per person and the taxi from Thiruvanthapuram to Varkala would be around ₹1800 – ₹2500 for an Innova
- By Train – Kochi to Varkala (Varkalasivagiri Station) – Depending upon the class of the coach ranging from ₹145 to ₹1000 per person.
- By Bus – Kochi to Varkala – Note there are no direct buses to Varkala, need to catch a bus from Ernakulam Bus Depot to Attingal and then get on to locally operated buses. Cheapest option available out there but very cumbersome ₹100 – ₹1000 depending upon the bus class.
The other travel choices would turn out to be expensive affair, as we would have to depend on many modes of transportation to go about, there are limited cab aggregators in Varkala.
Route:
Option 1: NH66
Option 2: NH66 until Sakthikulangara – Slight Right at Vellayittambalam Junction – Onto Neendakara – Chinnakara Road (We Opted for this route) Scenic Route
Option 3: NH66 and NH183 – Longer route but not that busy.
We opted for the NH66 route from Kochi to the resort. The roads leading until Cherthala were under road works due to road widening and flyover works which have begun recently and would be around for another couple of years if the timelines are met. This part of the journey was boring due to constant stop and go traffic, but Innova made us feel relaxed and not jumped.
After reaching Shaktikulangara we opted to continue the journey via the coast line (SH -Neendakara – Chinnakkada Road) as it would provide breath-taking scenic routes a road very less travelled, or you can also just continue along the NH66 till Paripally, the time difference is negligible.
Note that the SH roads are not that well maintained with lot of pot holes and have some portions of unpaved roads as well, but the scenic beauty along the coastal line is mesmerising, where roads hugs near the shore lines of the scene.
Feel free to get down and take memorable pictures along this route as these are priceless. Since we started our journey in the morning we opted for this route as we would have plenty of day light to see the mesmerising views. The weather gods were also kind, the sun was omnipresent marred by the clouds as it would rain anytime.
2. Financial Wisdom Amidst the Waves
While the allure of a holiday can be irresistible, we did not forget the importance of personal finance. In our blog, we emphasize how budgeting and financial planning play a crucial role during vacations. By setting clear spending limits and making informed choices, we ensured that our holiday did not strain our finances. Our blog post emphasizes the importance of personal finance even during leisure time. Here is how we integrated financial wisdom into our holiday:
- Budget Allocation: We set a clear budget of ₹65,000/- for our trip, allocating funds for accommodation, food, activities, and transportation. This disciplined approach prevented overspending and allowed us to enjoy our vacation stress-free. We don’t discriminate on that occasional cravings for an Ice-Cream you had watching the sea or that Kadak Chai along the route while you stretch your legs.
- Emergency Fund: Just as we carried an emergency kit in the car, we also had an emergency fund set aside. Unexpected expenses—like a flat tire or sudden health issues—can arise during any trip. Having a financial safety net ensures peace of mind. Allocated ₹20,000 for this.
- Travel Light – Prioritize Your Wallet: When embarking on a journey, there is no need to burden yourself with a wallet full of bank cards. Instead, focus on essentials. Carry your primary account card—the one you will use throughout the trip—and have an emergency backup card with just enough funds to get by. Avoid overloading your wallet with excess cards, cash, or belongings.
For a convenient and secure travel experience, consider using a high-quality travel wallet (affiliate link) designed to keep your essentials safe and organized. Remember, a stress-free holiday means being cautious and alert, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. While exploring new places, keep in mind that vigilance is essential—after all, there are unscrupulous individuals everywhere.
3. Our Blissful Stay: Elixir Cliff Beach Resort
After 5 hours on road, we were greeted with serenity nestled on the cliff, was our luxurious stay at Elixir Cliff Beach – a great resort with spacious rooms and suites overlooking the ocean, an ayurvedic spa, a good haven for relaxation. Why this Resort taught us some valuable financial lessons:
- Quality Over Quantity: The booking was made directly with the resort over the call. Agh! I know that feeling, in this modern era where everything is a tap away over the phone, still we opted for the good old ways. You may ask Why?
We chose quality over quantity when selecting our accommodation. Similarly, investing in quality assets—whether it’s a home, gold, silver or health— it pays off in the long run. A comfortable stay enhances our overall experience.
We checked all the avenues of Online Booking and got the best price possible for the days we opted for, then we rang up the resort and checked with them directly, they offered me a price I asked for a counter final offer, you would not believe I got ₹2000 flat off on each room plus I got this with breakfast inclusive. - Wellness Investment: The ayurvedic spa at the resort reminded us that investing in our well-being is essential. Just as we pampered ourselves with relaxation, allocating funds for health insurance, fitness, and mental wellness ensures a balanced life. Good old saying “Health is Wealth”. A new phenomenon in these modern era is what we call as Health Vacation to rejuvenate ourselves, this resort does justice without burning a hole in the pocket.
Why we choose Elixir over all the other options available in the vicinity of Varkala?. Elixir was not the cheapest option nor the most expensive one! We opted for a balance of what we were seeking in our stay. Which was comfortable, accessible, location, food, and spa. Most often we compromise on various aspects to get what we desire and not the other way around and spend a lot of money.
The perfect holiday for me personally is one where we spend quality time with our dear ones in a relaxed manner. Elixir had all what is required of for us, it had a good beach access from the cliff, swimming pool which was neat and tidy, kids play area, nice breakfast even though with limited options, good spacious rooms with nice comfortable bed.
Accommodation: ₹23500 for 2 Deluxe Sea View Rooms (inclusive of GST) – 2 nights
Spa: Ranging from ₹1000 to ₹5000 along with discount up to 20%
4. Must-Visit Places in Varkala
Varkala, with its seaside cliffs and pristine beaches, offers a unique blend of tranquillity and adventure. Our exploration of Varkala was not only about sightseeing; it was also an opportunity to learn valuable financial lessons, Here are some places we explored:
– Varkala Beach (Papanasam Beach)
Known for its solitude and stunning views, unlike the commercials beaches it has a back drop of Arabian Sea against cliffs. It is also a beach where last rites of a departed soul are practiced.
Financial Reflection: As we gazed at the vastness of the Arabian Sea, we contemplated the importance of long-term financial goals. Just as the sea stretches beyond our sight, our financial journey extends far into the future. We must plan wisely, invest consistently, and stay focused on our financial horizon. Most importantly we should also bear fruits of our investment during our life time and taking such holidays are crucial.
– Anjengo Fort & Lighthouse(Anchuthengu Fort)
A historic fort built in the 17th Century with a lighthouse approximately 130 feet in high captivating view of the sea on one side and backwaters on the other side.
Historical Investments: Anjengo Fort reminded us that investments—whether in stocks, real estate, or mutual funds—can withstand the test of time. Just as the fort stood strong against the waves, other calamities with testament of time our well-chosen investments can weather market fluctuations and grow steadily.
Entry Fees: ₹5 per person and ₹20 for the camera.
– Perumkulam Beach
Perumkulam Beach is located in the south cliff of Varkala, unlike the Papanasam beach this is quiet, secluded and accessible from our resort. Kids loved playing here with the waves, building sandcastle, finding various shells brought in by the waves.
Hidden Tranquility: Perumkulam Beach, with its black sand and secluded ambiance, offered a quiet escape from the bustling crowds. As we strolled along the shore, we reflected on the value of finding hidden gems in our financial portfolio. Sometimes, the lesser-known investments yield surprising returns. So, we should be on the lookout for such.
4. Culinary Delights: Food Places in Varkala
Lunch at Varkala Marine Restaurant: Overlooking the Papanasam Beach, its serene, visually pleasing and calming at the same time. If you are in a hurry skip this place, as it is made to order and the waiting times are 20-30 mins based on what you are ordering.

6. Savings and Serenity – a perfect Balance!
Our trip reinforced the idea that taking breaks need not derail our financial plans:
- Timing Matters: By planning our holiday during off-peak seasons, we saved on travel and accommodation costs. Timing our investments similarly—buying low and selling high—maximizes returns.
- Memories Are Priceless: While we were mindful of expenses, we also recognise that memories are invaluable. A well-planned holiday doesn’t compromise our financial stability—it enriches our lives.
In conclusion, Varkala taught us that every experience—whether it’s a cliffside view, a sumptuous meal, good adventure or a financial decision—has its own value. By weaving financial wisdom into our journey, we created a harmonious blend of adventure, relaxation, and culinary delights.
